Frequently asked questions

Key questions about digital evidence, compliance and usage.

What is a Sealway digital proof? +
A package that ties a file, or its fingerprint, to a qualified eIDAS timestamp and to mechanisms for independent verification. It makes it possible to demonstrate that, on a specific date, a content existed in a given state.
Does Sealway replace a bailiff or notary? +
No. Sealway lets you build timestamped digital evidence with probative value. For some acts, such as formal observations or authentications, only a ministerial officer is competent. Sealway can support these procedures but does not replace them.
Are my files sent to Sealway? +
Yes. Sealway receives the file, computes its fingerprint, then encrypts it before storage. It is retained for the duration of your plan: by default 7 days for the original file, longer with a subscription.
What is a qualified eIDAS timestamp? +
A token issued by a qualified trust service provider under the EU eIDAS Regulation. It enjoys a presumption of accuracy of the date and time, as well as a presumption of integrity of the associated data.
How can a third party verify a Sealway proof? +
If the third party has the evidence package, they can verify the proof independently of Sealway. The package contains the required elements: fingerprint, timestamp token, evidence metadata and anchoring data. It allows checking that the content matches what was timestamped, and verifying the token with the qualified provider.
Can I verify a file without having the evidence package? +
Yes, through the Sealway integrity verification form. It allows checking that a received file matches a certified content and has not been altered. This is useful for a recipient who has the file but not the full evidence package.
What happens if I later modify my file? +
The fingerprint changes. The evidence package keeps documenting the file state at the time of timestamping but does not cover later modifications.
Can I timestamp an email? +
Yes. Add Sealway in BCC when sending your email. Sealway receives the full message, with body, attachments and headers, then produces an evidence package from the received elements. The proof date corresponds to the timestamp of reception by Sealway. Sealway does not claim to prove the recipient read it.
Does Sealway certify a recipient has read an email? +
No. Sealway does not provide read receipts. Sealway makes it possible to prove that the full email was received by Sealway at a timestamped date, with its content, attachments and associated technical elements.
How long are my proofs kept? +
It depends on your plan. By default, the original file used to create the proof is temporarily retained for 7 days, then deleted. The evidence certificate remains available according to the service terms. We encourage you to download your evidence package to keep an independent copy.
Where is my data hosted? +
Data is hosted in the European Union, with European providers, including Scaleway. The master keys used to protect the data are kept in a key management service separated from Sealway’s application infrastructure. No data is transferred outside the EU without an appropriate legal basis.
What is the legal status of a Sealway proof in France? +
A qualified eIDAS timestamp enjoys a presumption of accuracy of the date and time, as well as a presumption of integrity of the associated data. Probative value remains assessed by the judge based on context. Sealway does not guarantee the outcome of any procedure.
Can I delete a proof? +
You can delete the items kept in your Sealway space according to the service terms. However, certain technical elements already issued, such as timestamp tokens or blockchain anchors, can remain verifiable, as they are designed to ensure the long-term traceability of the proof.
Does Sealway use a public blockchain? +
Yes. Every Sealway proof combines a qualified eIDAS timestamp with multi-blockchain anchoring. Anchoring inscribes cryptographic fingerprints into several public blockchains to strengthen traceability, resilience and long-term verifiability. No file, email, personal content, file name, recipient or attachment is published in plaintext on a blockchain. Blockchains only contain technical anchoring data. The qualified eIDAS timestamp remains the primary basis for evidentiary value; multi-blockchain anchoring complements it to strengthen independence and verifiability.
